PANGRATION - Crete

Pangration is one of those wrecks that really sticks with you, a proper piece of history brought to life just off Crete. We love that it’s so accessible, essentially a shallow water wreck with its bow breaking the surface. You’re looking at a merchant ship, sunk back in ‘41, and it’s a brilliant introduction to wreck diving without the usual depth challenges. What you get here is a chance to spend a good long time just soaking it all in. The stern sits around 30 metres, but the bulk of the ship, especially the midsection and bow, is much shallower, hovering around 15-20 metres. We often find ourselves circling the bridge, picking out structural details, imagining the ship in its prime. Schools of damselfish shimmer around the superstructure, and we’ve spotted moray eels peeking from shadowy crevices within the hull. Our favourite part has to be the cargo holds, where the light filters down, illuminating clouds of glassfish. It’s a site that really rewards a slower pace, giving you time to appreciate the scale and the history without feeling rushed. A real gem for anyone keen to explore a substantial wreck without needing advanced certs.
