St. George Cave - Crete

We love the St. George Cave for its sheer drama. Dropping in, you're immediately hit by that incredible Mediterranean blue, which quickly transitions as you approach the cavern entrance. It's less a cave and more an enormous grotto, carved into the cliff face, with a wide mouth that funnels you gently inside. Daylight never truly vanishes here, but the way it plays on the rock formations is beautiful, creating these ethereal shafts of light that dance on the bottom. We've seen big schools of Annular Seabream holding just inside the mouth, and the occasional Parrotfish or Mullet browsing the rocks near the entrance. Look closely for smaller stuff too, like the Elliptical File-Shell tucked into crevices or a Common brittlestar clinging on. We’d suggest going in the morning; the sun angle seems to hit just right, making the light show even better. It’s a pretty easy dive, especially if you’re new to overhead environments, with plenty of room and a strong sense of the exit.
