HALRONELL - South Coast

The *Halronell* on Ireland’s South Coast is a proper piece of history, especially for those who appreciate a good, accessible wreck dive. We’ve always had a soft spot for these ships that just… stop. She went down in heavy weather back in ‘61, and now rests upright in a comfortable 10 metres. You can really get a sense of her original form, the bow and stern still largely intact, the single shaft of her oil engine visible if you get a good look around. What we love most about the *Halronell* is how the wreck has blended into the seabed. Lobsters peek out from under plates of steel, their antennae waving slow greetings. Conger eels, some surprisingly chunky, have made homes in the deeper crevices, and you’ll often spot crabs scuttling over the hull. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration. Bring a good torch, even on a sunny day; the interior spaces, while not extensive, offer some lovely light play and a chance to peer into the ship’s past. For photographers, the ambient light and the way the kelp drapes over the metal make for some striking shots. It’s a cracking dive for anyone who enjoys shallow wrecks and a bit of history.
