Why dive here
With 185+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - HMS MIGNONETTE offers some of South Coast's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 9-15°C, warmest July, August, September.
The HMS Mignonette isn't just a hunk of metal on the seabed, it’s a tangible piece of history, resting at a respectable 51 metres. We love that it’s still so intact, a real time capsule from the First World War. Built in 1916, this Arabis-class sloop met its end just a year later from a mine, and it really shows you the brute force of that era’s naval warfare. Dropping down onto the Mignonette, you're immediately struck by its scale. Eighty-one metres long, it's a proper ship. The bow points proudly into the current, and you can still trace the lines of its four boilers and the massive triple-expansion engine. It’s an impressive sight, especially when the visibility is good, which it often is here on the South Coast. We usually find the best conditions mid-morning, before any afternoon chop really stirs things up. Exploring the Mignonette is like wandering through a sunken museum. The decks are largely gone, but the superstructure is still well-defined, offering plenty of nooks and crannies for curious divers. Look for the large propeller, often adorned with plumose anemones, their white tentacles gently swaying in the faint surge. Conger eels are often seen peeking out from behind plating, their heads like ancient gargoyles. Dogfish will sometimes make a casual pass, checking you out as you drift over the remains. It's a dive that rewards careful exploration, suited for experienced wreck divers comfortable with depth and perhaps a little chill.
