JENALISA - South Coast

The Jenalisa is a stern reminder of the sea’s power, a small fishing vessel that went down in 1996. We consider it a standout for its raw, untouched state; it’s not a site that gets hammered by divers, which we appreciate. Lying upright at 34 metres, she’s a compact wreck, only 11.3 metres long, but what she lacks in size, she makes up for in atmosphere. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the way the light filters through the green water, often quite murky, giving the whole scene a solemn feel. We love hovering over the deck, peering into the open wheelhouse, imagining the chaos of that February day. The wreck is starting to break down, the wooden superstructure softening, creating nooks and crannies for squat lobsters and small conger eels. We’ve spotted dogfish tucked into the sand nearby too, sometimes just a tail sticking out. It’s a dive for those comfortable with deeper water and cooler temperatures, ideally with a drysuit. Visibility can be hit or miss, so pick a calm day with slack tide for the best chance to really absorb the wreck’s details. We’d suggest focusing on the bow and stern, where the structure is most intact, and don't forget to shine a torch into the darker corners – you never know what’s watching you back.
