KILLARNEY - South Coast

The Killarney isn’t a deep dive, sitting at a maximum of five metres, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it's not a compelling one. We reckon it’s one of the South Coast’s more poignant wreck dives. What you're exploring here are the scattered remains of a paddle steamer, broken up by storms back in 1838. There’s a real sense of history. We’ve found bits of machinery, some twisted metal, and even the odd wooden plank, all testament to its violent end. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery here, but on a good day, with a bit of sunlight filtering down, the way it catches the various pieces of wreckage is quite beautiful. You’ll spend your time poking around the seabed, uncovering what the sand has recently exposed. It's a fantastic spot for lobsters and crabs – we've seen some absolutely massive ones tucked into crevices. Conger eels sometimes lurk amongst the larger debris. The site suits divers who appreciate historical context over pristine structure, perfect for a long, slow exploration, and easily accessible for newer divers wanting to experience a true shipwreck. We'd suggest going at slack tide to make the most of the search.
