LA SURVEILLANTE - South Coast

We’ve always had a soft spot for the wrecks off Ireland’s South Coast, and La Surveillante is right up there. This isn’t just a pile of metal; it’s a tangible piece of history, a French frigate from Napoleon’s doomed 1796 invasion fleet. You can almost feel the chill of the winter storm that crippled her, forcing the crew to scuttle her rather than let the British get their hands on such a prize. Dropping down to 29 metres, the wreck emerges from the green gloom, surprisingly intact in places. We love nosing around the stern, where the rudder post still stands, a silent testament to the ship’s former grace. This wreck truly comes alive with marine inhabitants. The timbers and ironwork are heavily encrusted with dead man’s fingers, a thick, white carpet that shimmers in your torch beam. Look closely, and you’ll spot conger eels peering from dark recesses, their thick bodies often filling an entire gap in the hull. Our favourite moments here are spent hovering over the scattered cannon, now completely colonised by plumose anemones, creating a soft, feathery landscape. This dive suits experienced cold-water wreck enthusiasts who appreciate history as much as the marine life, particularly those who enjoy a bit of thoughtful exploration over penetration. Visibility can be hit or miss, but on a good day, it’s magical, an eerie voyage back in time.
