NORWEGIAN - South Coast

The Norwegian, off Ireland’s South Coast, isn’t about dramatic drop-offs or pristine corals. It’s a proper wreck dive, a piece of history that hums with the past. Sunk by a U-boat in 1917, she was towed into Dirk Bay only to finally succumb to the waves. Now, she lies scattered at a shallow 13 metres, her remains spread across the seabed. We love how accessible she is, even for newer wreck enthusiasts, and the way the light filters down through the Atlantic green. You won’t find an intact hull here, but rather a fascinating debris field. We’ve spent hours picking through twisted metal plates, sections of her stern, and the massive boilers, now home to clouds of pollock and shadowy conger eels. Look closely, and you’ll spot dogfish tucked into crevices and armies of crabs scuttling over the rusting plates. It’s a rummage, in the best possible way, a true journey of discovery rather than a mere sightseeing tour. Our favourite part is finding the scattered portholes and imagining the ship in her prime. Go on a calm day; visibility can be a bit challenging otherwise.
