S.S. Malmanger - South Coast

The S.S. Malmanger holds a special spot for us, a real testament to how Ireland's wrecks just keep on giving. You’re dropping onto a big freighter, sitting upright, which always makes for an immersive experience. We love how the structure itself guides your dive; you can follow the lines of the cargo holds, poke around the collapsed superstructure, and imagine the old girl in her working days. What really gets us about the Malmanger isn't just the wreck itself, but the life that’s made it home. We’re talking about conger eels, proper thick ones, peering out from every shadowed nook, and those cheeky wrasse darting in and out of the rusted plating. Keep an eye out for the odd triggerfish, a less common sight in these waters, but they do show up. The bow section is our favourite, often blanketed in oarweed, creating this swaying, almost otherworldly garden where you might spot a skulking Norway lobster. Visibility can be typical Irish – sometimes glorious, sometimes a bit moody – but even on murkier days, the sheer scale of the wreck makes it worthwhile. It’s a site that rewards multiple visits, revealing new details and resident critters each time. Best tackled by experienced divers comfortable with deeper wrecks and changeable conditions, it’s a proper expedition dive, not a quick splash.
