VIFEREDO - South Coast

The Viferedo is one of those wrecks that just pulls you in, an old steamship that met its end way back in 1863. Dropping down onto her, you immediately feel the history; it’s a proper time capsule, sitting upright and surprisingly intact for something that’s been down there so long. We love poking around her engine room, where the machinery is still quite discernible, and the stern section often delivers a few surprises. Our favourite part has to be the bow, though, often shrouded in a shoal of pollack that dart in and out of the structure. Visibility here on the South Coast can be a bit variable, but on a good day, the light filtering through the water onto the encrusted metalwork is just beautiful. Keep an eye out for conger eels tucked into the darker recesses, and we’ve seen plenty of dogfish patrolling the sand around the wreck's perimeter. It’s a site that rewards a slow, methodical dive, perfect for those who appreciate a bit of maritime history and don't mind a chillier dive.
