Diving a U-boat is always a privilege, and the U-249 off Ireland’s West Coast is a real stand-out, even for us. This isn’t a quick jaunt; it’s a commitment, one that demands good conditions and a strong skipper. When you descend, the sheer bulk of her emerges from the gloom, a Type VIIC, resting upright, remarkably intact for a vessel sunk in 1945. You can trace her lines, from the conning tower, still defiantly standing, to the torpedo tubes, now silent and sealed. What we love here is the feeling of history, of a moment frozen in time. Shoals of pollock dart through the open hatches, and conger eels peer from behind crumpled plating. Visibility can swing wildly, but on a good day, with a shaft of sunlight cutting through the green water, the scale of her is humbling. We’d suggest a strong light; the deeper sections hold surprising details, and the colours, though muted, are still there if you look closely. This isn’t for beginners, but for experienced wreck divers, it's an incredible dive, offering a tangible link to a pivotal era.
