Centro de Buceo El Hierro - Canary Islands

You know, some dive centres have a real knack for picking their backyard, and Centro de Buceo El Hierro certainly did. This isn't a named dive site in the traditional sense, more a home reef, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s boring. We found ourselves coming back again and again, especially for a relaxed morning or afternoon dip when the bigger boats were out. It’s a gentle slope from the shore, transitioning from volcanic rock gardens into sand, perfect for spotting the less glamorous but equally fascinating critters. We've spent blissful bottom times just watching diamond lizardfish hunt, their eyes swivelling independently. The sharpnose puffers are always a riot, bumping into things, while the planehead filefish drift by, almost invisible. Keep an eye out for common eagle rays gliding over the sand – a truly elegant sight. Our favourite moment? Stumbling upon a Greek (the fish, not the person!) peeking from a crevice, their colours really popping against the dark rock. It’s a site that rewards the slow, observant diver, offering a calming contrast to the more dramatic walls El Hierro is famous for.
