DUEN (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The Duen isn't going to win any beauty pageants, but for those who appreciate a proper trawler wreck, she’s a gem. Sunk back in ’77 en route to Barry, this 14-meter fishing vessel sits upright at 53 meters, a depth that makes it a technical dive, but one worth the effort. We love the feeling of descending into that deep blue, knowing you’re about to hit something solid in the often-wild Cornish currents. The deck house is still fairly intact, and you can poke around the wheelhouse if your buoyancy is dialed in. Our favourite part is the stern, where the prop is usually still visible, sometimes draped in fishing net. The wreck itself has become home to plenty of conger eels – some of them absolute monsters – and the hull is usually plastered in jewel anemones and dead man’s fingers, glowing under a dive light. This is a dive for experienced technical divers, those who understand gas management and appreciate the silent history of a working boat. It’s not about bright colours; it’s about the atmosphere, the solitude, and the satisfaction of exploring a proper piece of maritime history.
