Bull Reef - Nova Scotia

Hook Island Reef, tucked into the Whitsundays, often gets overshadowed by its flashier neighbours, but we think that's part of its charm. It's not about huge pelagics here, though a Bull Shark sometimes cruises the deeper edges. We dive Hook for the sheer, vibrant density of reef fish, especially the smaller stuff. The shallow bommies are a kaleidoscope of Ternate Chromis and Fourline Cardinalfish, so thick they almost obscure the Staghorn coral. Look closer, and you'll spot Cockerel Wrasse darting in and out, or a Blue-spotted Stingray buried in the sand. Our favourite moments are drifting over the coral patches, watching Rainbow Parrotfish graze, their colours popping against the Cactus coral. We'd suggest an early morning dive here; the light filters through the water beautifully, and you avoid the midday boat traffic. It's a relaxed dive, perfect for photographers or anyone who loves to just soak in the intricate life of a healthy reef.
