Okay, the UAE. We’re not going to pretend it rivals the Red Sea, but for a convenient escape with some surprisingly good diving, it holds its own. Most divers head straight for Fujairah on the east coast, and for good reason. That’s where you’ll find the decent stuff - artificial reefs, an old cement barge, and during the right season, even whale sharks cruising past. The Gulf side, around Dubai and Abu Dhabi, is mostly about wrecks and slightly murkier conditions, though still an interesting day out if you're already there. We’ve had some fantastic dives tracking those impressive blue-white dolphins and spotting unique species like the crescent grunter, making it a solid choice for a weekend trip, especially from October to May when the water is warm and conditions calm.

Dubai & Abu Dhabi

Diving Dubai and Abu Dhabi isn't about natural coral landscapes; it's about the grit and ingenuity of man-made reefs and forgotten wrecks. We love the sheer variety of artificial structures here, from purpose-sunk ships to fabricated habitats that have become surprising havens for marine life. You'll spend most of your time exploring wrecks, where schools of Indian scad and coastal trevally swirl around the superstructure, or cruising over artificial reefs thick with favites and turbinaria corals. Look closely for the supreme limu, a local nudibranch, and keep an eye out for longnose trevally patrolling the deeper sections. Visibility can vary quite a bit, but we’ve had some cracking dives with 15-20 meters, especially outside the busy summer months. Currents are generally manageable, making it a good spot for beginners on some of the shallower sites, but the wrecks definitely cater to the intermediate and advanced diver. Our favourite time to dive is definitely the cooler months, roughly October to April, when the water temperatures are pleasant and surface conditions tend to be calmer. Don’t expect vibrant coral gardens like the Red Sea, but do expect intriguing encounters and a unique perspective on how life adapts to new environments.

Fujairah

Fujairah often gets overlooked, but honestly, we think that's part of its charm. It’s a completely different vibe from the glitz of Dubai, and the diving reflects that. Here on the Gulf of Oman side, you're looking at a mix of wrecks and reefs, generally pretty accessible. We love the easy boat rides out to sites like Inchcape 1 or Martini Rock, where you can often spot slender threadfin bream schooling over the corals. Visibility can swing a bit depending on the plankton blooms - sometimes it’s a calm 15 metres, other days it’s closer to 5 metres, but that often means more pelagics. We’ve had incredible encounters with bigeye houndsharks gliding through the deeper sections, especially around the pinnacles. For macro enthusiasts, keep an eye out for banded cleaner shrimp tucked into anemones; they’re everywhere if you know where to look. Our favourite is exploring the wrecks, feeling the slight current push you gently over the metal, imagining the stories they hold. The coral, while not always vibrant, has some interesting structures, particularly the staghorn and pagoda varieties, creating nice hiding spots for smaller reef fish. It's not a 'wow' every dive, but it's consistently enjoyable and offers a proper escape.
