Go Dive Pacific - Kaikōura

Kaikōura. Even the name sounds a bit bracing, doesn't it? Go Dive Pacific, though, is where we head when we’re after something unique, a real cold-water special. It’s not about tropical colours here. Forget that. Instead, it’s about the sheer density of life, a rugged, wild kind of beauty you just don't get in warmer climes. Drop into the kelp forest and you’re immediately immersed in this swaying, golden-brown world. Sunlight filters through the fronds, dappling the purple sunset clams clinging to the rock. We love keeping an eye out for Opalfish darting between the stalks, and there are always heaps of Spotty and Snapper nosing around. The kelp is also home to those chunky Red Rock Lobsters and the spiney Kina, tucked into crevices. Take it slow, push past the outer edge of the kelp, and you might spot the European fan-worms waving their delicate tentacles. The water can be chilly, so a drysuit is definitely our pick, even in summer. The currents can be a bit frisky too, especially around the points, so keep an eye on the tides and chat to the local operators before you jump in. It’s a site that rewards patience, revealing something new each time we visit, a proper dive into the wild Pacific.
