Haylee’s hideout - Kaikōura

Long Reef. Let's be honest, the name doesn't exactly scream drama, does it? But don't let the unassuming moniker fool you. This isn't one of Somosomo's famous current-swept walls, and that's precisely why we love it. Instead, you get a genuinely mellow coral garden, maxing out around 17 metres, perfect for taking your time. We've watched new coral growth here for years; it’s like seeing a vibrant, living nursery unfold. Visibility averages around 13 metres, which is plenty to pick out the intricate details. You'll find yourself drifting over slopes packed with young, colourful hard and soft corals. Keep an eye out for sneaky wrasse darting between the branches, and the occasional leopard hind peering from a crevice. We've had some cracking encounters with bumphead parrotfish here too, chomping their way across the reef with that distinctive crunch you can almost hear through your mask. It's a fantastic spot for photographers wanting to focus on macro life without fighting a ripping current, or for anyone who just wants a peaceful, pretty dive.
