ISLAND SEA - Salt Island & Cooper Island

The *Island Sea* lies broken across the seafloor, a testament to Hurricane Hugo's power in 1989. We love this site for its dramatic history and the way nature has reclaimed it. This isn't one of those pristine, upright wrecks; the *Island Sea* is essentially a debris field of twisted metal, but that's precisely its charm. As you descend, the sheer scale of the wreckage becomes apparent. Massive steel plates lie scattered, creating nooks and crannies that are perfect hideouts for nurse sharks and large groupers. We’ve often spotted eagle rays cruising by the deeper sections, their shadows gliding over the corrugated steel. The bow and stern sections, while damaged, still offer enough structure for some fascinating penetration if you're comfortable with overhead environments and your buoyancy is spot on. Keep an eye out for the resident barracuda, often hanging motionless near the remains of the bridge. This site suits divers who appreciate a wreck with a story, where the passage of time and the forces of nature are etched into every corroded beam.
