RMS Rhone Stern - Salt Island & Cooper Island

The stern of the Rhone is our favourite part of this iconic wreck, and frankly, the more interesting dive. Dropping down, you hit 15 metres pretty quickly, finding yourself right on the prop shaft. The intact propeller is a spectacle, really. We love to imagine it turning, churning through the waves back in 1867. You can poke around the engine room, but it’s a tight squeeze in places; definitely not one for the claustrophobic, but worth it if you’re comfortable with some overhead environments. Look for the big green morays that often hang out in the machinery, their heads poking from the gloom. Spotted trunkfish mosey around the broken plating, and we've seen schools of blue runners darting through the clearer sections above the deck. The light plays beautifully through the fractured metal, illuminating patches of sponge and coral that have taken hold. You’ll bottom out around 28 metres here, so keep an eye on your no-decompression limits, especially if you’re doing any penetration. This is a solid intermediate dive, best for those with good buoyancy who want to really explore a piece of history. Come early in the morning for the best light and fewer crowds.
