La zelée - Moorea & Tahiti

La Zélée is where we often recommend divers head when they’re looking for a bit of everything Moorea has to offer. It’s got that classic French Polynesian feel: warm, clear water, and a lively reef system. The first thing you’ll probably notice is the sheer quantity of fish. Schools of big-eye trevally swirl around, sometimes so dense they block the sunlight, giving the reef a momentary twilight feel. We’ve spotted Boomerang triggerfish and Orange-lined triggerfish picking their way along the corals, while Lemon Peel angelfish dart in and out of the staghorn and cauliflower formations. Keep an eye out for the Spotted Hawkfish perched on coral heads, their eyes tracking your every move, and the Brilliant Red Hawkfish, a bit shyer but truly striking. This site suits divers who appreciate a healthy, bustling reef. It’s not about huge pelagics here, though you never know what might cruise by. We find ourselves just floating, watching the Bullethead parrotfish munch on coral, or following a Humphead wrasse as it gracefully patrols the deeper sections. It’s a site that rewards a slow pace, letting the marine life unfold around you.
