Vallée aux Murènes - Moorea & Tahiti

Vallée aux Murènes on Moorea is one of those places that sticks with you, even if it’s not always the star on a dive shop’s whiteboard. We love it because it’s so reliably, delightfully busy without being overwhelming. You drop down into this sand channel, maybe 15 metres deep, and the current usually gives you a nice gentle push. It’s not about huge pelagics here, though we’ve seen eagle rays glide by, it’s about the sheer density of reef fish going about their day. The name, 'Valley of Morays', is a clue. You’ll spot white-mouth morays peering out from every nook and cranny, sometimes two or three sharing a small rock. But our favourite part? The Desjardin's Sailfin Tangs, bold and colourful, weaving through schools of Blue Green Chromis. They just blanket the Staghorn and Pavona corals. Look closely for the smaller stuff too, the Banded Tobies are always a good spot, and the Black Butterflyfish are simply everywhere. It’s a great second dive of the day, a perfect follow-up to a deeper drift, offering a relaxed, vibrant experience where you can just soak it all in. We’d suggest going in the morning if you can, the light really brings out the colours of the corals.
