Machchafushi Wreck - South Ari Atoll

The Machchafushi Wreck, out in South Ari, is one of those sites we always try to squeeze in. It’s not some ancient hulk, but a purpose-sunk fishing vessel, dropped in the mid-90s. This means it’s settled beautifully onto the sandy bottom, perfectly upright and intact, making for an easy swim-through. We love exploring the wheelhouse, imagining the old fishing routes, and peeking into the engine room. What really makes it special, though, is the sheer volume of glassfish and schooling fusiliers that blanket the wreck. Seriously, they’re so thick they often block out the light as you approach, parting just enough for you to push through their shimmering wall. We've seen eagle rays cruise past in the blue, and sometimes a curious reef shark will do a lazy circuit. It’s an easy, calm dive, great for photographers wanting to capture those dense fish schools, and definitely a site we’d recommend for anyone looking for a relaxed wreck exploration without strong currents.
