Embudu Channel / Embudu Express - South Malé Atoll

Embudu Express is one of those Maldivian channels that delivers exactly what you hope for: fast action, big fish. We’re talking proper drift diving here, so if you’re not comfortable zipping along, maybe start slower. The real magic happens when the current’s ripping in, flushing the channel with nutrient-rich water. That’s when you’ll find the grey reef sharks lined up like they’re waiting for a bus, often joined by whitetips and even the occasional hammerhead cruising deeper. We love dropping in on the outside reef first, maybe hanging back for a few minutes to watch the schooling blue-lined surgeonfish and scarlet soldierfish before committing to the channel proper. Once you’re in, it’s a ride. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff wedged into crevices as you fly past, like the iridescent six-line wrasse or the shy filamentous blenny peeking from its hole. It’s not just about the sharks; the sheer density of fish life here is incredible. The corals are mostly hard, star column and closed brain corals holding on tight against the flow. For experienced divers who crave a bit of adrenaline with their pelagics, Embudu Express is a standout.
