South Malé Atoll offers some of Maldives's richest diving, with 100+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, sea turtles, spinner dolphins and whale sharks. Water ranges 28-31°C, warmest April, May, July.
South Malé Atoll feels like the quieter, more chilled-out sibling to its northern neighbour. We love the drift dives through the channels, especially around Kandooma Thila, where the current can really pick up. If you time it right, you’ll be swept past schooling fusiliers, the water shimmering with their scales, on your way to a nurse shark slumber party. It’s accessible from Malé, which means easy transfers, but doesn’t have that same buzzing boat traffic. The real draw here for us are the cleaning stations. We’ve spent whole dives just watching manta rays circle above us, almost choreographed, while blennies zip out to do their work. Keep an eye out for eagle rays gliding past in the blue, sometimes in small squadrons. On the reef itself, the colours are softer, but look closer for the small stuff - those shy false brown morays peeking from crevices or the vibrant reds of a small-eyed squirrelfish. We’d suggest going in the dry season, December to May, for the best chances with the mantas and consistently good visibility. The channels can be punchy, so a reef hook is your friend.

Adam Faru
Adam Faru, in South Malé Atoll, offers a glimpse into a typical Maldivian reef. We've seen a handful of hard corals here, mostly star and wrinkle varieties. It's a gentle dive, good for getting your buoyancy dialed in or for a relaxed afternoon. Don't expect dramatic action, but it's a solid, easy dive site for those looking for a calm experience.
Admiral 1
Admiral 1 is one of those wrecks that just *feels* right. It’s a solid, photogenic dive, not too deep at 24 metres, which means decent bottom time and plenty of light filtering down. The wreck itself, an old fishing trawler, sits upright on the sandy bottom, perfectly oriented for a gentle drift along its length. We love how the wheelhouse is still largely intact, a real highlight for peering into, imagining the last crew. It’s an intermediate dive, mainly because of currents that can pick up, so keep an eye on the dive brief. The superstructure is now a bustling apartment block for all sorts of reef fish. Look for lionfish tucked into shadowy corners and moray eels peeking from pipes. Our favourite part has to be the mast, often shrouded in a swirling school of fusiliers so thick they momentarily block the sun. It’s a classic Maldivian wreck experience, offering that perfect balance of history and vibrant reef life.
Admiral 3
Admiral 3 isn’t the oldest wreck in the Maldives, but we love its accessible depth and the way it’s become a living reef. This is a purposeful sinking, a 30-meter steel vessel put down years ago to create an artificial reef. You’ll find it sitting upright on a sandy bottom at 23 meters, making it an ideal first wreck dive. The ship itself is largely intact. You can swim through the cargo hold, which is now home to schools of glassfish that shimmer like a liquid curtain. Look out for the resident moray eels peeking from crevices and the occasional turtle resting on the deck. Our favourite part? The entire superstructure is draped in soft corals, purple and orange, swaying gently in the mild currents. Visibility here is usually excellent, often 20 meters or more, which makes for some great wide-angle shots of the wreck against the blue. It’s a perfect dive for beginners wanting to experience a proper wreck, and for photographers looking for a colourful, easily navigable subject.
Alikoe Giri
Alikoe Giri is a gentle introduction to Maldivian pinnacles. It’s a shallow spot, topping out at 16 metres, which makes it a really comfortable dive for newer divers or those who just want to take it easy. We’ve drifted around its edges, spotting plenty of damselfish and fusiliers, the kind of fish that seem to swarm in the shallows here. Keep an eye out for moray eels tucked into the coral; they love this kind of shelter. It’s a good, unhurried dive if you’re in South Malé and want a relaxed afternoon in the water.
Alimas Faru
Alimas Faru, in South Malé Atoll, offers a relaxed dive focused on coral formations. We've seen good examples of larger star, wrinkle, and galaxea corals here. It's a site for divers who appreciate reef structure and a calmer pace, rather than big pelagics or strong currents. If you're looking to spend time exploring healthy coral formations, this site fits the bill.
Ali Tila
Ali Tila is a modest pinnacle in South Malé. We've found it a pleasant, straightforward dive, perfect for a relaxed afternoon. The corals here, notably Galaxea and various star corals, are the main draw. It’s a good spot for newer divers or those looking for a gentle drift over healthy hard coral formations.
Anna Giri
Anna Giri, a modest pinnacle in South Malé Atoll, makes for a really pleasant start to the day. It’s a comfortable 25m dive, perfect for beginners, letting you ease into things without any drama. We’ve found it’s often buzzing with the usual reef suspects – parrotfish grazing away, small schools of fusiliers darting about. Keep an eye out for a moray eel tucked into a crevice; they’re often curious here. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s a consistently good, relaxed dive.
Appa Thila
Appa Thila, a solid pinnacle dive in South Malé, offers a comfortable entry point for newer divers. The top of the thila sits around 21 metres, making it an easy profile to manage. We've seen plenty of schooling snapper here, along with the usual reef residents darting between the coral heads. It’s a good spot to get your fins wet and enjoy a relaxed dive without battling strong currents, which can be a real factor in other parts of the atoll. Think gentle exploration rather than high-octane drift.
Aquarium
Aquarium, in South Malé Atoll, is a gentle coral garden. It’s a good spot for newer divers or those looking for a relaxed second dive. You'll likely see parrotfish nibbling at the corals and some smaller reef sharks cruising by. It’s a pretty easy drift, making for a pleasant, undemanding dive.
Banana reef
Banana Reef offers a horseshoe-shaped coral formation, sheltering a lagoon often calm enough for newer divers. We've seen plenty of reef sharks cruising the outer edges, along with schools of snapper and fusiliers hanging around the overhangs. The reef top in the shallower sections is good for spotting turtles and smaller reef fish. It’s a solid Maldivian dive, reliable for a pleasant drift.
Banner Reef
Banner Reef, in South Malé Atoll, offers a pretty relaxed dive. It’s a good spot if you’re looking for a gentle drift over a healthy reef. We’ve seen nice colonies of wrinkle coral, the kind with those intricate brain-like patterns, and both lesser and larger star corals, often dotted with tiny Christmas tree worms. Keep an eye out for the seagrass beds, too – they’re a bit different from the usual coral formations and attract smaller crabs like *Leptodius sanguineus* picking through the blades. We’d suggest this one for a calm afternoon dive, maybe as a warm-up or wind-down.
Biyadoo Housereef
The Biyadoo housereef is a straightforward shore dive, easy to access from the beach. We usually find smaller reef sharks cruising the drop-off and plenty of fusiliers in the shallows. It's a relaxed spot, ideal for a casual afternoon dive or for divers getting comfortable with drift diving in the Maldives' currents.
