Miyaru Faru - South Malé Atoll

Miyaru Faru, or "Shark Reef" in Dhivehi, delivers on its name more often than not. We've had some memorable encounters here, particularly with grey reef sharks patrolling the outer edge. This site is all about looking out into the blue. The wall itself is fairly standard Maldivian fare, you’ll spot lionfish tucked into crevices and the occasional moray, but our eyes are always scanning the deeper water. The sweet spot is around 30 metres. There's an overhang here, a fantastic shelter from the current that can sometimes rip through. Position yourself there and wait. We've seen schools of fusiliers so thick they block the light, sometimes attracting dogtooth tuna that slash through them. It’s a proper pelagic show. We’d suggest hitting this site early morning for the best chance at the big stuff – the sharks seem more active then. It’s definitely one for experienced divers comfortable with current and happy to spend their dive looking away from the reef.
