Cohen’s Corner - KwaZulu-Natal

The Grottos is a curious one, tucked away in the Nananu Passage. We love it for its unusual vibe; it’s not your typical Somosomo Strait wall dive. Instead, you're exploring a collection of yellow soft coral pinnacles, starting shallow at 6m and then dropping to around 20m. It’s the swim-throughs that really make it, weaving through these coral structures where the light filters in. We’ve bumped into school after school of barracuda here, and there are often reef sharks patrolling the deeper edges, both blacktip and whitetip. Look closer at the corals too – there’s a surprising amount of smaller stuff, plenty of six-line wrasse and colourful blennies darting around the honeycomb and staghorn patches. Our pick for timing: definitely on the incoming tide. That’s when the water movement really brings the site to life, and the visibility tends to improve from its average 13m. It’s a good choice for divers who appreciate a bit of exploration and don’t mind a site that feels a little different from the usual Fijian playbook.
