Cowrie - KwaZulu-Natal

The Highway, just a quick boat ride from our usual Taveuni haunts, is one of those sites that consistently delivers. We love a good wall dive, and this one doesn't disappoint, dropping quickly with plenty of nooks to explore. The name comes from a big archway swim-through, and swimming through it feels like you're on a fast lane into the blue. Visibility here averages around 9m, which isn't gin-clear, but it's enough to appreciate the schooling fusiliers that often block out the sun, and the flashes of Spanish mackerel and Giant Trevally patrolling the deeper sections. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too; we've spotted some great pygmy gobies and blennies tucked into the corals if you slow down and look closely. This site is a great pick for divers who enjoy a bit of current and want to see some action, both big and small, without going too deep.
