Hopscotch - Sodwana Bay

Maggie’s Maze always feels like a bit of a secret, even though it’s been on the Grand Cayman dive map for decades. We love dropping into this site, especially in the late morning when the sun really lights up the complex network of arches just east of the mooring. It’s not a huge site, topping out around 19 meters, but the real draw is the winding canyon that opens up into a sandy patch. Drifting through those three intersecting arches, we often find ourselves looking up at Fairy Basslets swimming upside down, perfectly aligned with the rock. It’s disorienting in the best way. Keep an eye out for nurse sharks tucked under overhangs; they’re often snoozing away. Our favorite part, though, is gliding out of the final swim-through, emerging over the sand, and looking back at the archway framed by the deep blue. If you’re lucky, you’ll hit a day when a school of Horse-Eyed Jacks decides to circle, swirling around you like a living tornado. Visibility averages a comfortable 23 meters here, making it perfect for photographers who want to play with light and shadow in the crevices. It’s a site that rewards slow exploration, best for those who enjoy intricate reef structures over vast open spaces.
