MAPUTO - Sodwana Bay

Alright, Maputo. We’ve had some cracking dives on this old tug, even if it is technically a dangerous wreck according to the books. Sunk back in ‘79 after a bump with the MV Indoda, she sits upright at a nice, easy 20 metres. You’ll feel that shift from open water to the solid structure as you drop down, the dark mass gradually resolving into the shape of a ship. What we love about Maputo is how completely nature has reclaimed it. It’s not one of those pristine, intact wrecks, more a skeleton, a framework for life. There are plenty of swim-throughs where the superstructure has collapsed in on itself, creating tight squeezes perfect for exploring. Look for the resident potato bass lurking in the shadows – they’re huge here, and often curious. We’ve also seen schooling snappers and barracuda hanging off the bow, catching the current. It’s a site that really comes alive when there’s a bit of a push, bringing in the bigger pelagics. Our favourite time to dive it is late morning, after the first boats have gone, when the light starts to penetrate those deeper sections. You’ll leave feeling like you’ve been somewhere genuinely historical, a proper time capsule.
