BOHEMIAN - South Coast
The Bohemian, off Mizen Head, is a proper dive, a deep shot that really makes you work for it. This isn't one for a quick dip; at 30 metres, you're looking at decent bottom time limits, but it’s worth every minute. The old steamship, all 121 metres of her, hit the rocks way back in 1881. What you get now is a massive, broken-up wreck, scattered across a rocky seabed. We love how the structure has become part of the reef, completely colonised. You’ll drop down into that Atlantic green, and the sheer scale of the wreck starts to emerge from the gloom. We’ve seen conger eels poking out from plates of twisted metal, and sometimes you get a dogfish or two cruising past the boilers. There are anemones everywhere, covering the hull in a soft, waving carpet, and the light filtering down can make the whole place feel incredibly dramatic. Our pick for timing is a slack tide on a calm day, otherwise, that current can really rip. It’s a dive that rewards experience, a real piece of history down there in the cold.

The SS Bohemian was a passenger steamship built in 1870 by the famed Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast-the same builders who would later construct the Titanic. Operated by the Leyland Line, she regularly plied the transatlantic route between Liverpool and Boston. On February 7, 1881, while on a westbound passage from Boston, she was nearing the Irish coast in heavy weather. In a disastrous navigational error, the vessel struck a submerged reef off Mizen Head, one of Ireland's most treacherous headlands.
The impact tore a hole in the ship's hull, and she began to sink rapidly. While most passengers and crew were saved, the incident was a dramatic end for the sturdy vessel. Today, the remains of the Bohemian lie scattered at a depth of around 30 meters. The powerful currents and the violent nature of her sinking have broken the ship apart, but divers can still identify key features like her boilers, engine components, and sections of the hull. The wreckage is a fascinating archaeological site, offering a glimpse into the design of a 19th-century ocean liner and a challenging, rewarding dive for advanced recreational divers exploring Ireland's wild south coast.
