HERMANOS JIMENEZ - Balearic Islands

The Hermanos Jimenez, a trawler sunk back in ‘96, sits upright on the sand at 38 metres. We love it because it’s a proper dive, a bit of a journey down to the deck, and then you’ve got a whole wreck to explore. The wheelhouse is still largely intact, and you can peek inside – sometimes we spot a lone conger eel lurking in the shadows, or a big grouper hanging out by the superstructure. It’s got that slightly eerie, enclosed feeling you get with a good wreck, the light fading as you descend, and then the ship materialises from the blue. Visibility here can be brilliant, 30 metres plus on a good day, but even when it’s a little murky, the wreck is big enough to hold your attention. We often find schools of barracuda circling above the mast, their silver bodies glinting. Look carefully around the winches and fishing gear still on deck; there are usually moray eels tucked away, and the occasional spiny lobster peeking from under a plate. It’s a good choice for advanced divers looking for a bit of depth and a decent wreck penetration, though we’d suggest leaving the full internal exploration to those with specialist training. For everyone else, circling the outside and peeking into the wheelhouse offers plenty to see.
