MANDEO, & SAVANA - Balearic Islands

The Mandee and Savana aren’t deep, not by any stretch, but they offer a unique kind of wreck dive right in Puerto Andratx. We’re talking about two vessels that caught fire and sank while still tied to the pier in 1978. It’s pretty wild to think about, a wreck dive essentially in a harbour. The depth stays around two metres, so it’s really more of a snorkel or a very shallow free dive, but don’t let that put you off. What you get here is access to a genuine piece of maritime history, not out in the open sea, but right near the shore. We love the eerie feeling of finning over the skeletal remains, imagining the chaos that must have unfolded. You can spend ages exploring the twisted metal, the bits of machinery that are still recognisable. It’s a completely different vibe than a deep offshore wreck. For someone looking for a relaxed exploration, keen on history, or just wanting to spend some time in the water without the fuss of full scuba gear, it’s a great pick. Look closely, and you’ll spot small schools of juvenile fish darting in and out, and plenty of crabs scuttling amongst the rust.
