Pecio Cala Monjo - Balearic Islands

Cala Monjo feels like discovering a secret. You'll find this wreck tucked away in a small bay, and it's less about historical gravitas and more about the simple pleasure of an accessible, evolving artificial reef. The wreck itself is a small, wooden fishing boat, probably no more than 15-20 meters long, and it sits upright on a sandy bottom at around 18 metres. We love how the wooden hull has softened over time, offering perfect crevices for small moray eels and the occasional octopus. As you descend, the light filters through the clear Mediterranean water, illuminating schools of damselfish that dart in and out of the skeletal remains of the superstructure. The stern is our favourite part, with a small propeller still mostly intact, now completely encrusted with sponges and tube worms. It’s a gentle dive, really, one for relaxing and observing. We'd suggest going in the morning; the sun angle really brings out the colours on the wreck and it’s usually calmer. If you're after a busy, bustling reef, this isn't it. But if you want a quiet, intimate encounter with a wreck that’s truly become part of the seabed, Cala Monjo delivers.
