VILLA DE CALELLA - Balearic Islands
The Villa de Calella is a cracking little wreck, sitting in just 2m of water, which makes it an ideal spot for a leisurely snorkel or even a freedive. We love that it’s so accessible. You don’t need a full dive setup to appreciate this piece of history. The wreck itself is an old fishing trawler, sunk in the 1960s, and it’s pretty broken up now, scattered across the sandy bottom. You’ll find its skeleton draped in green algae and barnacles, and there's always a flurry of small fish darting in and out of the metal ribs. Think damselfish, tiny sea bream, and blennies peeking from every crevice. We’ve even spotted a moray eel or two tucked away under a larger piece of hull. The shallow depth means the sunlight really penetrates, illuminating the colours, and it’s surprisingly peaceful even on a busy day. Our favourite time to visit is early morning; the light is softer and you often have the place to yourself. Just be mindful of boat traffic if you're exploring the surface. It’s not a challenging dive, obviously, but it’s a genuinely charming little site for anyone who enjoys a bit of history with their marine life, all without the need for a tank.
