Wreck of U-331 - Balearic Islands

The U-331 wreck in the Balearics always delivers a quiet thrill. This Type VIIC U-boat, sunk in 1942, sits deep, typically in the 70-meter range, so it's one for the technical crowd. The sheer scale of it, lying on its side, is what truly impresses. We love how intact the conning tower remains, often swarming with schools of barracuda that shimmer in the ambient light. Dropping down, the bow section is especially atmospheric, with open torpedo tubes hinting at its wartime purpose. Inside, the pressure hull is largely collapsed in places, but you can still make out the outline of the control room. Look for lobsters tucked into every crevice and the occasional large grouper patrolling the stern. Our favourite detail is the anti-aircraft gun mount, now a solid platform for anemones and sponges. It’s a serious dive, requiring experience with deep stops and gas management, but for those with the training, it’s a tangible piece of history that’s become a thriving artificial reef. We always suggest keeping a keen eye on your bottom time here; it’s easy to get lost in the details.
