GOTEBORG - West Coast (Gothenburg)

Diving the GOTEBORG isn't about tropical colours or massive pelagics. It's about history, cold water, and a palpable sense of the past. We love this site for its pure, raw drama – a dangerous wreck, indeed, but one that offers a unique glimpse into maritime heritage. The GOTEBORG, an East Indiaman, sank in 1745. Now, she rests at a shallow 9 metres, making her accessible to most divers, though we’d suggest good buoyancy control given her delicate state. You’ll weave through the skeletal remains of her timbers, a ghost ship slowly reclaimed by the Baltic. Look closely, and you’ll spot plumose anemones clinging to the darker nooks, and we’ve often seen small schools of cod darting between the ribs of the hull. It’s a site for contemplation, for imagining the lives of those on board, and for appreciating how quickly nature reclaims even the grandest human endeavours. Our favourite moments here are often just hovering, taking in the sheer scale of the wreck, feeling the cool water, and being utterly alone with history.
