METTE MEJ - West Coast (Gothenburg)

The Mette Mej, off Gothenburg, is a proper wreck dive, not just a pile of rubble. She’s a fishing trawler, upright on the seabed at 45 metres, and remarkably intact for her age. We love exploring the wheelhouse and the open cargo holds, which are often packed with cod, sometimes even conger eels peeking out from darker corners. It’s a deep dive, so obviously for experienced cold-water divers, but the reward is a genuinely atmospheric exploration. What makes her a standout for us is the way the light filters down, even on a cloudy day, creating these shafts through the structure. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, you get a solid 10-15 metres, enough to appreciate the scale. We’d suggest timing your dive for slack water to avoid strong currents, which can pick up, especially around the exposed stern. Keep an eye out for nudibranchs on the deck plating, often a good indicator of slower current. A twinset and good bottom time management are essential here.
