U 534 - West Coast (Gothenburg)

Diving the U-534 off Sweden's West Coast feels like stepping back in time, a sombre journey into a piece of wartime history. This German Type IXC/40 U-boat rests at a consistent 40 metres, upright but broken into three main sections, a result of its sinking in May 1945 by a British bomber. As you descend, the sheer scale of the 76-metre submarine becomes apparent, its conning tower still identifiable despite the years. We’ve found the stern section, with its intact propellers, particularly striking, often draped in fishing nets. While not teeming with colourful corals, the wreck itself has become an artificial reef, attracting cod, pollock, and plenty of anenomes that cling to the metal. It’s a dive for experienced cold-water wreck enthusiasts comfortable with deeper profiles and the often-moody Scandinavian visibility.
