CHALOUPE 112 - Cornwall & Devon

The *Chaloupe 112* is a small tug, and yes, it’s a “dangerous wreck” according to the official charts, but don’t let that put you off. It simply means it’s shallow, sits upright, and can be a bit of a hazard for boat traffic if they aren’t paying attention. For divers, it’s brilliant. We’re talking five metres deep, tops, often less depending on the tide. This isn’t a grand, sweeping wreck dive; it’s an intimate exploration. We love it for those days when the deeper sites are blown out, or when you just want a relaxed potter. The tug lies pretty intact, and because it’s so shallow, light penetrates right through, illuminating the encrusting life. You’ll find a surprising amount of plumose anemones, their frilly white heads swaying gently, and plenty of wrasse darting in and out of the small wheelhouse. Our favourite part is peering into the engine room, even though it’s largely collapsed, you can still make out the machinery. It’s an ideal site for macro photography or for new divers looking to get comfortable with wreck penetration, even if it’s just poking your head into a doorway. The visibility can vary, as with any shallow site, but if you catch it on a calm day at high tide, it's a real treat.
