CHARMANT - Cornwall & Devon

The Charmant is just delightful. We love a wreck that doesn’t demand too much of you, and at 11 metres, this one is perfect for extended bottom times, especially if you’re newer to wreck diving. She was a French trawler, sunk in 1935 after colliding with another ship, and now she sits upright on the seabed, remarkably intact. We’ve spent many hours here, poking around her bow and stern, imagining the chaos of that night. The wheelhouse is gone, but you can still make out the general layout, and her hold often has conger eels peering out from the shadows. The real show, though, is the sheer volume of wrasse and pollack that mill about the structure. Sometimes, a big school of mackerel will flash past, turning the light momentarily silver. Our best advice? Go on a calm day; the visibility can be excellent, and you’ll get to appreciate the scale of her. It’s a proper historical dive without the technical faff.
