CHURCH ROCKS - Cornwall & Devon

Church Rocks, off Teignmouth, isn't your typical wreck dive. Forget deep, dark holds – this is an archaeological site, a late sixteenth-century armed cargo vessel, thought to be a Venetian trading galley, spread across the seabed in just three metres of water. We love the historical whisper here; it’s less about intact structure and more about appreciating the context, the story of a ship stranded and broken over 400 years ago. You'll spend your dive in surprisingly bright conditions, finning slowly over the exposed timbers and ballast stones. The real joy is spotting how marine life has integrated with the remains. Small crabs scuttle amongst the rocks, anemones cling to ancient wood, and a surprising number of blennies peek from crevices. It’s a gentle exploration, perfect for divers who appreciate history and the subtle beauty of a reef reclaiming man-made structures, rather than those chasing big pelagics or dramatic swim-throughs. The shallowness makes it a superb spot for extended bottom times and getting really close to the details. We’d suggest going at slack tide for the best visibility and to truly soak in the atmosphere of this unique, protected site.
