CITY OF GLASGOW - Cornwall & Devon

The City of Glasgow, off the Lizard, isn’t your typical big, broken-up wreck. We love it because it’s a lifeboat, an ex-RNLI Barnett class, resting upright and mostly intact on the seabed at 22 metres. There's something poignant about seeing a vessel designed to save lives now a home for them. You can really get a sense of its original form, the strong lines still clear. What we really enjoy here is the way the wreck has become a proper little ecosystem. Schools of pollack often hang above the wheelhouse, their silver scales catching the light, while lobsters poke out from under plates of metal. The interior is quite accessible, offering some gentle swim-throughs where you might spot a shy velvet crab or a squat lobster clinging to the structure. It’s a site that suits divers who appreciate historical context and a more intimate wreck experience, rather than those chasing huge cargo ships. Dive this one on a calm day; the visibility can be excellent, making the distinct shape of the lifeboat truly stand out against the sandy seabed.
