CLAREEN - Cornwall & Devon

Clareen, a sailing vessel that went down in 1924, is one of those shallow wrecks we keep coming back to. At just 3 metres deep, it’s a brilliant shore dive, easy to access and surprisingly rich for such a small, broken wreck. We love it for the sheer accessibility and the way the light filters through the kelp, illuminating bits of decaying timber and twisted metal. It’s perfect for a long, relaxed dive, really letting you soak in the atmosphere. What you’ll find is the scattered remains of a wooden hull, largely broken up but still very much a wreck, not just a pile of wood. The timbers are encrusted with jewel anemones in oranges and purples, and the gaps between the frames are home to crabs and blennies. Look closely in the crevices for small conger eels, and you’ll often spot dogfish cruising over the sand nearby. It’s a fantastic site for photographers practicing macro or wide-angle in shallow water, and honestly, it’s just a lovely place to spend an hour underwater, even for experienced divers. Visibility can be a bit variable, but on a calm day with a bit of sun, it’s surprisingly clear, offering charming views of this old ship giving back to the sea.
