CLAREMONT - Cornwall & Devon

Alright, let's talk about the *Claremont*. This isn't a deep dive, not by a long shot, with a maximum depth of 2m. We're actually talking about a wreck that's largely intertidal, a real historical relic from 1881 that reveals itself dramatically at low tide near Atherfield Point. Our favourite way to experience the *Claremont* isn't with tanks, but with a mask and snorkel, or even just a pair of sturdy wading boots and a keen eye. What you'll find here is a fascinating skeletal remains of a 68.9m iron vessel. The metal plates and ribs are twisted and barnacle-encrusted, holding surprisingly large pools of water even as the tide recedes. We've spent hours poking around, finding juvenile fish darting between the decaying structure and anemones clinging to the rusted hull. The character of this wreck is all about its age and exposure; it's battered, worn, and feels like a genuine piece of maritime history you can literally walk around. It's a fantastic spot for photographers looking for stark, textural shots, or for anyone who loves exploring shipwrecks without the need for a full diving setup. Just be mindful of the tides, of course; they can come in surprisingly fast here.
