COMPEADOR (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The Compeador, or what we strongly suspect is the Compeador, sits deep at 53 metres off the coast of Cornwall. This is a dive for experienced wreck enthusiasts, no question. Dropping down, the gloom of the deep water gives way to the ghostly outline of the trawler, surprisingly intact for its age. We love the way the light filters through the upper sections on a clear day, illuminating details you might otherwise miss. What you'll find here is a genuine piece of history, colonised by the sea. Think big conger eels poking out from behind collapsed plating, jewel anemones clinging to every surface, and schools of bib darting through the superstructure. Our favourite part has to be the stern, still relatively upright, where you can often spot large anglerfish hunkered down. Visibility can be a challenge, so pick your day carefully, ideally on a slack tide with minimal swell. It’s a proper expedition, demanding good trim and confidence in low light, but the reward is a quiet, evocative dive into a forgotten past.
