CORUNDUM (PROBABLY) - Cornwall & Devon

There’s a reason we put 'Probably' in the name for this wreck. The Corundum is a bit of a local mystery, though the consensus seems to be that this is her. What we know for sure is that down at 40 metres, she’s a proper dive, one for the experienced cold-water wreckies. Dropping onto the deck, you’ll find two massive boilers standing proud, often swarming with pollack darting in and out of the gloom. The triple expansion engine is a fantastic exploration point, still looking like it could churn a propeller. The hull is largely intact, a testament to her robust construction, and we love swimming through the cargo holds, imagining the coal she carried on that final journey in 1914. Dogfish often lie camouflaged on the seabed nearby, and the whole wreck is encrusted with an amazing tapestry of jewel anemones and dead man’s fingers – a riot of orange and pink against the deep blue. Go on a slack tide, obviously. This isn't a dive you want to fight current on, especially at that depth. It's a proper adventure, a real piece of history brought to life by the life that’s made it home.
