COURAGE - Cornwall & Devon

Diving the *Courage* is a proper historical adventure, and for us, that’s its main draw. Lying at 55 metres, it’s definitely one for the experienced trimix crowd, but if you’ve got the training, it’s a dive that rewards. We love the feeling of descending onto a wreck that played a real part in WWI, sunk by a German submarine’s gunfire back in 1917. You’ll find the trawler largely intact, especially her engine room, with that triple expansion engine still standing proud. The wreck has become a fantastic artificial reef. Shoals of bib and pouting hang around the superstructure, darting into the shadowed nooks. Look closely, and you’ll spot conger eels in the deeper recesses, often surprisingly large. We always feel a real connection to the past here; it’s not just metal on the seabed, it’s a story. Current can be a factor, so picking your slack is essential. Best dived on a calm day to fully appreciate the scale and history.
