CUBANA - Cornwall & Devon

Cubana is one of those wrecks we return to time and again off the Cornish coast, and for good reason. She was a steel-hulled steamship, torpedoed in 1918, and what's left of her sits upright at a very manageable 23 metres. We love how intact she feels, even after all these years. Drop down and you’re immediately enveloped by the gloom, but as your eyes adjust, the shape of the bow, surprisingly intact, really hits you. She's covered in plumose anemones, their white tentacles swaying with the gentle surge, and you often find conger eels peering out from gaps in the plating. Our favourite part is exploring the stern section; the propeller shaft housing is still visible, and you can imagine the sheer force of the torpedo strike that twisted the metal so violently. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery, as it often is in the UK, but on a good day, when the sun penetrates the green water, the atmosphere is simply incredible. This is a solid dive for anyone comfortable with wreck penetration, or just keen to explore a piece of maritime history colonised by the local wildlife. Definitely one to add to your UK logbook.
