DAGEID - Cornwall & Devon

DAGEID is a wreck dive that really delivers, especially if you appreciate a good intact structure. Lying in 44 metres, she’s well beyond the recreational limit, so this is one for the technical crowd. We’ve always found the visibility here to be surprisingly decent for the UK, often pushing 10-15 metres on a good day, allowing you to appreciate her sheer scale. Built in Fredrikstad in 1904, this steamship met her end in 1918 after a collision, and she’s settled upright, largely complete, with her bows pointed north. Dropping down, the first thing that strikes you is the twin boilers, massive and hulking, a real focal point. They’re a great place to start your exploration, covered in jewel anemones that glow under your torch. The triple expansion engine is also impressive, a jumble of metal now, but you can still make out its purpose. We love finning along her deck, past the cargo holds which are now home to conger eels and squat lobsters. Our favourite part is the stern, where the prop shaft leads out, often surrounded by schools of small pollack. The upright mast is usually dotted with spider crabs, slowly swaying with the surge. DAGEID offers a deep, rewarding dive on a coherent wreck, providing a real sense of history and plenty of nooks for marine life. Just be mindful of the potential for currents, as they can pick up.
