DUMFRIES - Cornwall & Devon

The Dumfries is a proper deep dive, sitting at 55 metres off Trevose Head. We love a good wreck, and this World War One merchant vessel, torpedoed by a German submarine in 1915, really delivers. It’s a site for experienced divers, no question, but the rewards are there for those with the training. Dropping down, the sheer size of the Dumfries starts to emerge from the gloom. The stern is often the most intact section, with the propeller still sometimes visible. You'll find plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, though penetration is definitely for the very experienced. We’ve seen conger eels that look like they’ve been living here since the ship went down, along with some truly enormous lobsters tucked into the plating. The sheer amount of fish life, shoals of bib and pollock, makes the wreck feel alive despite its tragic history. Visibility can be a challenge, as with many UK deep wrecks, but on a good day, the sense of history is palpable. We’d suggest diving this one on a slack tide for the best chance to appreciate it.
